I think John Cage was monumental for creatives in almost all mediums. His works purpose, similar to that of artist Marcel Duchamp, is to push the boundaries of what we know of art, and even further, what we know of our physical world. Looking at abstract art forms at this period in time is normal. I cannot imagine living in a time where abstract art didn't exist. Is that even possible? I wonder how baffled John Cage would be if he were alive to see the abstractions in music today. He would be amazed! Although, I was personally unamused by John Cages famous 4:33 performance. It was uncomfortable and annoying. It almost mocked musicians who spent their lives dedicated to creating beautiful music. Why makes something if it is not beautiful and technical. In the case of studio art mediums that explore boundaries, you are able to turn away and process the image you see. In a music hall setting, and even listening to it in class, it is very uncomfortable to be forced to hear bizarre sounds. I personally think there can be nicely sounding abstract music, but I did not like the work John Cage made even if the message behind it is what matters.
